The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) published a public scam alert pointing to bank notices about fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and other scams reported to the HKMA. The alert covers press releases issued by The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited, and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, with links available on the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not ask for sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. Anyone who has provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to the scams should contact the relevant bank using the information in its press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
