The National Bank of Serbia published an update on discussions with a European Commission Technical Assistance and Information Exchange expert mission reviewing Serbia’s legal and institutional safeguards for central bank independence. The mission forms part of a regional initiative for EU candidate countries and supports Serbia’s alignment with requirements under negotiating Chapter 17 on economic and monetary policy. Although Serbia’s legislation is largely aligned with the EU acquis, the central bank has prepared draft amendments to the Law on the National Bank of Serbia and submitted them to the European Commission for an opinion. The amendments are intended to establish the conditions for the bank’s full integration into the European System of Central Banks when Serbia joins the EU. The mission’s findings and recommendations will complement, rather than replace, the European Commission’s formal monitoring and assessment process.
