The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert following reports of fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens related to The Bank of East Asia, Limited, and pointed the public to the bank’s press release via a link on the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to banks’ websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. Anyone who may have provided personal information or conducted transactions via the fraudulent sites or screens was advised to contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force.
