Sveriges Riksbank will stop redeeming Swedish banknotes that have been invalid for more than 10 years from July 1, 2027. Applications to redeem affected banknotes must reach the central bank by June 30, 2027, accompanied by documentation showing the source of the funds. Applications will be assessed individually, and approved redemptions are subject to a SEK 300 fee. The central bank estimates that invalid banknotes worth about SEK 3.9 billion remain unredeemed. It cited the difficulty of obtaining supporting records after 10 years and the cost of maintaining the redemption process as reasons for setting the deadline.
