The National Bank of Ukraine published its 2024 oversight analysis of transactions made with payment cards issued by Ukrainian banks and financial institutions, finding that Ukrainians continued to favour cashless payments despite wartime disruptions. Cashless operations accounted for 94.6% of card transactions by number and 64.5% by value, within a total of 8,654.4 million card transactions worth UAH 6,577.4 billion. Most card activity took place in Ukraine (91.8% by number and 90.1% by value). Point-of-sale payments were the largest cashless use case (73.4% of cashless transactions by number and 46.8% by value), followed by card-to-card transfers (31.1% by value, UAH 1,318.4 billion) and online payments for goods and services (13.6% by number and 14.7% by value, UAH 622 billion). The payments ecosystem expanded, with payment terminals up 10.5% year on year to 496,600 (97.5% contactless) and card-accepting outlets up 12.8% to 518,400, while ATMs were broadly stable at 15,700; total issued payment cards reached 132 million as of 1 January 2025 (up 15%), and contactless and tokenized cards continued to grow, supporting about 95% of retail cashless transactions being made using contactless or NFC technology.
