The German Bundesbank published its 2024 payments statistics, showing continued growth in card payments and rising adoption of SEPA instant credit transfers, while the number of ATMs and transfer terminals operated by German payment service providers continued to decline. Payments made with cards issued by German payment service providers increased by 11% year on year to around 13 billion transactions, accounting for 40% of all non-bank payments. Direct debits remained widely used, rising 3% to 9.9 billion transactions, but their share fell from 34% to 31%, while credit transfers increased 4% to 7.6 billion transactions and held a 24% share. SEPA instant credit transfers grew 37% to 337 million transactions, lifting their share of electronically initiated transfers by 1 percentage point to 4.9%. In value terms, credit transfers totalled EUR 64 trillion and represented 90% of all payments, while direct debits stood at EUR 5.9 trillion (8%). ATM numbers fell 3% to about 49,750, and transfer terminals dropped 3% to around 22,500.
