De Nederlandsche Bank has published an analysis showing that takeaway and delivery meals have become more important in Dutch household spending and inflation. Their share of the consumer basket has risen from about 1.6% in 2015 to more than 3%, increasing the effect of price changes in this category on overall inflation. The category’s inflation contribution rose from typically less than 0.1 percentage point before the COVID-19 pandemic to 0.35 percentage point in 2023, driven by higher labor, energy and food costs alongside increased household spending. It has since declined to 0.13 percentage point as prices have risen more slowly, rather than because the category’s spending share has fallen, and remains above its pre-2020 level.
