Japan's Ministry of Finance published Japan's end-May 2026 international reserves and foreign currency liquidity data, showing official reserve assets of USD 1.306 trillion, down USD 77.107 billion from end-April. Foreign currency reserves accounted for USD 1.094 trillion of the total, alongside USD 123.646 billion in gold, USD 60.894 billion in special drawing rights, USD 11.512 billion in the International Monetary Fund reserve position, and USD 15.909 billion in other reserve assets. Within foreign currency reserves, securities totaled USD 931.678 billion and deposits USD 162.235 billion, almost all of them placed with foreign central banks and the Bank for International Settlements. Other foreign currency assets stood at USD 34.501 billion, including USD 34.269 billion in loans to the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The template also showed USD 20.0 billion in aggregate forward and futures positions in foreign currencies against the yen and contingent short-term net drains on foreign currency assets of negative USD 9.037 billion.
