The Italian Institute for Insurance Supervision has announced that it will participate in EIOPA's second joint mystery shopping exercise in the European insurance sector, focused on how non-life insurance policies are sold online. The exercise will cover 10 member states, including Italy, and the results will be published in the first half of 2027 to provide comparable evidence across Europe and support stronger policyholder protection. The campaign will use a common methodology developed by EIOPA and the national authorities, including IVASS. IVASS describes mystery shopping as a market conduct supervision tool in which qualified individuals act as undercover customers to test whether insurance distributors apply the rules correctly and to capture how products are actually sold, including through online interactions and potentially in-person visits. The first joint exercise, launched in 2024 on life insurance sales, had results published in mid-2025 and found broad compliance with distribution rules alongside areas for improvement in transparency and consumer advice.
