The Hong Kong Monetary Authority reported that Exchange Fund assets totaled HKD 4,335.4 billion at Aug. 31, 2026, down HKD 68.3 billion from the end of July. Foreign currency assets declined by HKD 68.0 billion, mainly because of withdrawals of Fiscal Reserves placements, while Hong Kong dollar assets fell HKD 0.3 billion, primarily due to the mark to market revaluation of Hong Kong equities. The monetary base increased by HKD 0.1 billion, or 0.01%, to HKD 2,080.2 billion, as the amortization of discounts on Exchange Fund Bills and Notes more than offset a decline in outstanding Certificates of Indebtedness. Backing assets rose by HKD 3.2 billion, or 0.14%, to HKD 2,329.9 billion, lifting the backing ratio to 112.00% from 111.86% at the end of July.
