Central Reserve Bank of Peru President Julio Velarde highlighted the central bank’s autonomy, legal framework and sole mandate of price stability as key factors supporting Peru’s monetary stability. Speaking after receiving an honorary professorship from the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, he said Peru is experiencing its lowest-inflation period in 150 years. Velarde also credited the central bank’s staff and successive governments’ commitment not to borrow from the institution. He noted that the bank has faced no political pressure in recent years and contrasted its focused mandate with the multiple objectives assigned to some central banks in developed economies.
