Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority limits each insurance company to one foreign employee and requires prior approval for work permits

The Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) issued supervisory directives aimed at strengthening the development of local insurance personnel by tightening limits on foreign staffing and introducing a regulator approval requirement for work permits in the insurance sector. Each insurance company is permitted to employ only one foreign staff member, who cannot serve as Chief Finance Officer. The Immigration Department will not issue or renew work permits for foreign personnel in the insurance sector without prior written approval from IRA, and any firm seeking to employ foreign personnel outside the new guidelines must submit a formal exemption request and obtain written approval. The measures apply with immediate effect for new appointments and for existing foreign staff at the point of contract renewal.
