The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert after Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited reported fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens, and directed the public to the bank’s press release via a hyperlink on the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS (including via embedded hyperlinks). Individuals who have provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through the fraudulent websites or login screens should contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
