The South African Reserve Bank published an updated International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity Template covering the short-term foreign currency assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank and South Africa’s central government, with data as at end of October 2025. Official reserve assets were reported at USD 71,550 million on an approximate market value basis. The release includes a maturity breakdown of foreign currency flows and derivative positions, including net forward and futures positions of USD 57 million short and USD 546 million long (net per period). It also reports other contingent foreign currency liabilities of USD 1,229 million within a one-year horizon, with central government components of USD 876 million principal and USD 353 million interest, and discloses a currency composition split of USD 68,159 million in Special Drawing Rights basket currencies including gold and USD 3,391 million in currencies outside the basket. The template reiterates that, from January 2013, foreign-currency reserves placed with fund managers are classified as securities rather than deposits.
