The National Bank of Ukraine has issued a UAH 2,000 banknote into circulation as the country’s new highest denomination. It is legal tender for retail purchases, bank deposits and payment transactions, and is intended to address changes in cash use linked to wartime shifts in the economy, incomes, prices and consumer behavior. The denomination is expected to partially replace UAH 500 and UAH 1,000 notes, reducing banknote production, transport, storage and servicing costs while making cash handling more efficient. UAH 1,000 notes currently represent more than 55% of the total value of banknotes in circulation. The rollout will be gradual and based on demand, with several million notes planned for production in 2026 following advance testing of ATMs, self-service terminals and sorting machines. The banknote depicts Ukrainian poet and dissident Vasyl Stus and contains more than 20 security features. These include an enhanced color-changing SPARK feature and an Anima Color windowed security thread with animated blue-and-yellow images.
