The Central Bank of Egypt, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates, has launched the “Open Your Account in Egypt” initiative in collaboration with the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr. The initiative is designed to streamline access to Egyptian banking services for Egyptians working abroad through a cooperation protocol signed by the parties. Under the initiative, Egyptians abroad can open an account with the National Bank of Egypt or Banque Misr by visiting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate to complete and sign the account opening form. The diplomatic mission verifies the form, which is then re-verified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt before being sent to the banks for account processing; the Central Bank of Egypt framed the initiative as supporting inbound remittances and encouraging expatriates to invest savings in Egyptian saving instruments while reducing friction and costs in transfers. The Central Bank of Egypt also indicated it will continue coordinating with the Ministry and other authorities on further initiatives, including enabling instant crediting of inbound remittances to customers’ bank accounts in Egypt at any time and advancing the digitalisation of banking services for customers in Egypt and abroad.
