In remarks before the Eurogroup meeting in Luxembourg, Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Finance and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis said the process to replace Isabel Schnabel on the European Central Bank’s Executive Board would begin at the meeting. The European Council had received an ECB letter requesting that the procedure start ahead of the expiry of Schnabel’s term in early January. Pierrakakis also framed the Eurogroup’s immediate policy challenge as protecting households and businesses from high energy prices and rising inflation while preserving fiscal credibility amid pressure in bond markets. He said measures should remain within the existing fiscal framework, while national budgets should better support Europe’s strategic priorities and investment needs. The agenda also included exchange rate developments and progress on the Capital Markets Union, alongside the Market Integration and Supervision Package scheduled for discussion by the Economic and Financial Affairs Council.
