The Central Bank of Uruguay, through its Financial Services Superintendency, approved a new regulatory framework for virtual asset service providers. The framework implements existing legislation by setting the conditions for these firms to operate and be supervised in Uruguay, and by defining which activities fall within the license and the requirements for firms active in this market. The rules also introduce requirements aimed at strengthening user protection, risk management, information security and anti-money laundering controls. The central bank linked the framework to the growing global use of virtual assets and said it is intended to provide greater certainty and predictability for the development of this activity under standards aligned with international best practices.
