The Central Bank of Ecuador reported that the Financial and Monetary Policy and Regulation Board approved updated secondary rules for the country’s credit data registry system. The rules reduce the retention period for individuals’ credit information from six years to four and shorten the period of operations covered by credit reports from three years to two. The update aligns the rules with 2025 amendments to the Organic Monetary and Financial Code, strengthens personal data protections and establishes criteria for incorporating future credit information sources. It does not automatically authorize access to new databases, remove legal confidentiality restrictions or require public or private entities to provide information, and it does not permit unrestricted access to sensitive or protected data. Implementation will be gradual and coordinated with supervisory authorities.
