The Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Bank Negara Malaysia agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation on financial technology, digital assets, cross-border regulation and financial market connectivity. The initiatives include a joint policy workstream on compliant cross-border stablecoin use cases, closer regulatory exchange on tokenisation and digital money, and mechanisms to strengthen cyber resilience and counter scams and fraud. The central banks will promote greater use of local currencies in bilateral trade and investment and enhance connectivity between their real-time gross settlement systems. They will also explore linking Hong Kong’s Central Moneymarkets Unit with Malaysia’s Real-time Electronic Transfer of Funds and Securities System, expand cooperation on Islamic finance, and share knowledge on data-driven platforms intended to widen small and medium-sized enterprises’ access to trade finance.
