The New Zealand Financial Markets Authority has appointed Dr Philip Stevens as its Chief Economist, with a mandate to strengthen the regulator’s research-driven and data- and intelligence-led approach in support of its strategic priorities and regulatory focus. Stevens brings more than 25 years of economics experience, including senior public sector roles and a doctorate in Economics from the University of Oxford. The role includes leading and developing a team of researchers and economists to deliver economic research and analysis to inform regulatory priorities, embed economic theory in decision-making, and deepen the FMA’s understanding of economic drivers and market dynamics across the financial sectors it regulates; he will start in November and report to Chief Executive Samantha Barrass.
