The White House announced a USD 15 billion Mesabi Metallics steel mill in Iowa, which is expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs and support up to 6,000 construction jobs. The project is projected to add USD 95 billion to the U.S. economy over the next decade. The mill is planned to produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually in its first phase, with capacity later rising to about 10 million tons. It will use iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ newly opened Minnesota mine, described as the first new U.S. iron ore mine in 50 years. The White House linked the investment to tariffs, permitting reforms and changes in mining and energy policy, and reported that domestic mills now supply 84% of the U.S. finished steel market, up from 77% in 2024.
