The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a notice from Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited warning that several fraudulent websites are impersonating HKICL and falsely offering “Buyer Online Protection” and other support for Faster Payment System transactions. The sites claim to provide buyer refunds, unauthorised transaction reporting and online transaction support, but are designed to obtain users’ personal identification details, phone numbers and bank account information. The notice says the fraudulent websites have no affiliation with HKICL or its business. It adds that HKICL does not directly provide FPS services to individual members of the public or proactively contact them under usual circumstances. Users are being urged to stay alert to suspicious calls, websites and other communications, protect personal information and report suspected fraud to the Police.
