The National Reserve Bank of Tonga issued a warning notice about “BG Wealth Sharing/DSJEX”, a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme circulated primarily on Facebook that impersonates a legitimate crypto trading service and targets individuals including the Tongan diaspora in Tonga, New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. The central bank highlighted that cryptocurrency payments have no legal protections and are not reversible, meaning it cannot step in to help consumers recover funds. It described typical scam tactics including directing victims to scam-controlled trading platforms that display fake real-time data and fabricated profits, promises of “free” cash or cryptocurrency, pressure to invest larger sums, and blocked withdrawals followed by demands for additional “taxes” or “withdrawal fees” that do not result in any payout.
