The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched a domestic instant payment system that processes transactions within seconds, 24 hours a day throughout the year. The system is open to all commercial banks, with Intesa Sanpaolo Banka BiH, Raiffeisen Bank and Sparkasse Bank d.d. BiH participating initially after completing technical adjustments and testing. Together, the three banks account for one-quarter of the country’s banking-sector assets. The system is based on the European instant payment model adapted for the Western Balkans and is supported by EUR 2 million from the European Union. The central bank’s transaction-processing fee is lower than its existing giro clearing fee, while participating banks gain infrastructure for new digital services. Other banks will join as they complete their technical and operational preparations. The central bank plans to add services including QR-code payments and, at a later stage, cross-border payments.
