The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced supervisory and regulatory relief to support FDIC-supervised institutions and borrowers affected by the July 21-22 severe storms in Lewis and Upshur counties, West Virginia. Institutions are encouraged to work constructively with affected borrowers, and the FDIC will not criticize prudent loan modifications consistent with safe and sound banking practices. Disaster recovery activities may receive favorable Community Reinvestment Act consideration. The FDIC will also consider delays in regulatory reporting, provide flexibility for disaster-related difficulties with publishing and other branch requirements, and expedite requests for temporary banking facilities. Institutions should evaluate each loan modification under the applicable accounting standards to determine whether it involves a borrower experiencing financial difficulty.
