The World Bank Group has launched a financing initiative with the Brazilian Development Bank to accelerate decarbonization in Brazil’s energy intensive and high value industries. The package comprises a USD 1 billion International Bank for Reconstruction and Development loan and a USD 60 million Clean Technology Fund loan, with the operation expected to mobilize another USD 1.8 billion in development and commercial financing. Funding will support emissions reductions in sectors including steel, cement, chemicals, glass and aluminum, as well as investment in sustainable aviation fuel, e-methanol, biomethane and other low carbon fuels. It will also finance shared infrastructure such as green hydrogen and ammonia storage and pipelines. Resources will be channeled through the Brazilian Development Bank to reduce risks for early investments, attract private capital and support Brazil’s target of cutting the greenhouse gas intensity of industrial gross domestic product by 30% by 2033.
