The National Bank of Moldova published monthly statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, covering banks’ spot, swap and forward purchases and sales against the Moldovan leu and excluding transactions executed by the central bank. The release distinguishes between the interbank market (trades between commercial banks) and the intrabank market (trades between banks and their clients), with activity in the published tables concentrated in spot transactions. In euro equivalent terms, interbank spot turnover excluding the National Bank of Moldova totalled purchases of EUR 91,178.5 thousand and sales of EUR 31,916.0 thousand, dominated by the euro (purchases EUR 90,836.6 thousand; sales EUR 30,196.0 thousand). Intrabank spot volumes totalled purchases of EUR 498,564.88 thousand and sales of EUR 874,525.1 thousand, led by the US dollar (purchases EUR 211,364.5 thousand; sales EUR 311,345.5 thousand) and the euro (purchases EUR 273,030.7 thousand; sales EUR 514,914.0 thousand), with smaller amounts in Russian roubles, Romanian lei, sterling, Swiss francs, Ukrainian hryvnia and other currencies. The published SWAP and FORWARD tables show no volumes in either market segment. Transactions are recorded on the trade date and converted into EUR using average monthly exchange rates, while swap volumes are calculated as a maturity-weighted daily average. The National Bank of Moldova notes the statistics are published monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting period.
