The National Bank of Moldova published monthly statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, reporting banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu across interbank and intrabank segments, excluding transactions conducted by the central bank. In SPOT trading (EUR-equivalent), interbank purchases totalled EUR 10.8m and sales EUR 15.4m, driven mainly by EUR (EUR 8.2m buys and EUR 11.8m sells) and USD (EUR 2.7m buys and EUR 2.5m sells). Intrabank SPOT activity was larger, with purchases of EUR 369.1m and sales of EUR 585.8m, led by EUR (EUR 207.8m buys and EUR 361.2m sells) and USD (EUR 150.8m buys and EUR 184.0m sells), with smaller volumes in Romanian leu, Russian rouble and pound sterling. SWAP activity was limited to EUR 35.7k on both sides in the interbank market, and no FORWARD transactions were recorded. The figures are compiled from banks’ reports, recorded on trade date and converted into EUR using monthly average exchange rates, with SWAP volumes calculated using a maturity-weighted daily average; the statistics are published monthly by the end of the following month.
