The World Bank Group and the Djibouti government have launched the Djibouti AgriConnect Compact, a national roadmap for reforms, investment and partnerships intended to expand agricultural production, attract private capital, create jobs and strengthen food security. Djibouti is the first country in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan region to join the AgriConnect initiative. The compact prioritizes livestock, horticulture and dates, with measures focused on stronger producer organizations, better access to finance, infrastructure investment, improved animal health and agricultural services, and a more supportive business environment for agribusiness. Livestock accounts for nearly three-quarters of agricultural GDP and supports about 80% of the rural population, while horticulture and dates could increase domestic production and create jobs in processing, logistics, trade and marketing. The roadmap seeks to reduce Djibouti’s reliance on imports, which currently meet nearly 90% of its food needs.
