The Bank of Italy’s August 2026 banking statistics show that annual private sector lending growth accelerated to 3.7% from 3.5% in July, based on the harmonized methodology of the European System of Central Banks. Lending to households grew 2.9%, up from 2.6%, while lending to nonfinancial corporations increased 4.2%, compared with 4.1% in July. Private sector deposit growth slowed to 1.8% from 2.4%, while bond funding growth rose to 5.9% from 5.6%. Household borrowing costs increased, with the annual percentage rate of charge on new housing loans rising to 3.99% from 3.81% and the rate on new consumer loans reaching 10.78%, up from 10.38%. The rate on new loans to nonfinancial corporations declined to 3.71% from 3.79%, comprising 4.40% for loans of up to EUR 1 million and 3.30% for larger loans. The average rate on outstanding deposits remained at 0.69%.
