Finansinspektionen, together with the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden), published an analysis of debts registered with Kronofogden that originate from mortgages over 2021–2024. The review finds that the vast majority of mortgage borrowers continue to meet interest and amortisation payments, with around 3,000 of Sweden’s roughly 3.5 million mortgage borrowers receiving a claim from Kronofogden in 2024. Despite the low incidence, both the number of mortgage borrowers ending up with mortgage-related debt at Kronofogden and the total amount outstanding have increased over time. Just over 3,000 mortgage borrowers received claims in 2024, around four times the 2021 level, while the aggregate mortgage-related debt at Kronofogden rose from SEK 750m to SEK 4,750m over the same period. More men than women received claims, and among those who subsequently received a ruling (betalningsanmärkning), more than four in five had previously had debts with Kronofogden, although that share fell from 87% in 2021 to 80% in 2024.
