The British Columbia Securities Commission has launched Scamtones, an advertising and fraud-prevention campaign that uses a set of custom ringtones to prompt seniors and their families to recognize and avoid investment scams, particularly those delivered through unknown calls. The campaign distributes five downloadable ringtones that play anti-fraud messages in different musical styles and highlight common red flags of investment fraud. Scamtones are hosted on Scamtones.ca, a new microsite that also provides resources on investment fraud and elder financial abuse, with additional related materials available via the BCSC’s InvestRight.org website. The campaign was launched ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
