In a meeting with the shareholders and chief executive of JSC Basisbank, National Bank of Georgia Vice President Nino Jeladze discussed Georgia's macroeconomic conditions, the banking sector and the central bank's supervisory framework. The discussion also covered Basisbank's acquisition of Liberty Bank, which participants described as a transaction that would strengthen competition in the banking sector and support the emergence of a third systemic bank. The parties also discussed carrying out the integration process within the established deadlines and in full compliance with legal requirements. A separate part of the meeting focused on prospects for deeper economic cooperation between Georgia and China, including a direct payments scheme and a project to link the two countries' payment systems. The National Bank of Georgia said the central banks of Georgia and China are actively cooperating on that initiative, with the aim of simplifying payments and reducing transaction costs.
