Payments Canada has outlined how the forthcoming Real-Time Rail could benefit consumers, businesses and governments when the system launches in the fourth quarter of 2026. The new infrastructure will enable account-to-account payments to be initiated, cleared and settled within seconds at any time, providing immediate access to funds and settlement finality. The update follows confirmation that the system remains on track for a phased launch after industry testing. Unlike existing payment methods, Real-Time Rail payments will provide certainty over when funds have been deposited, helping users avoid late fees and manage cash flow. Adoption of the ISO 20022 messaging standard will allow payments to carry structured information such as invoice references, purchase order numbers, tax identifiers and remittance details, reducing errors and accelerating reconciliation for businesses and governments.
