The South African Reserve Bank published its International Reserves Template for December 2024, updating the IMF-style “international reserves and foreign currency liquidity” disclosure for the South African Reserve Bank and the Central Government of South Africa. Official reserve assets were reported at USD 65,459 million at end-December 2024. Other foreign currency assets were USD 23 million, including USD 1 million of central government working-balance deposits and USD 22 million of financial derivatives not included in official reserve assets. Predetermined net drains on foreign currency assets within one year included central government outflows of USD 3,557 million in principal and USD 1,841 million in interest on foreign currency loans, securities and deposits, alongside a net long position of USD 532 million in forwards and futures and other accounts receivable of USD 54 million; contingent drains included other contingent liabilities of USD 858 million (USD 426 million principal and USD 432 million interest). The memorandum currency composition reported USD 62,340 million in SDR-basket currencies including gold and USD 3,119 million in currencies outside the SDR basket, and the template noted that reserves placed with fund managers have been classified as securities since January 2013.
