The Zimbabwe Insurance and Pensions Commission has begun paying USD 200 each to 8,600 eligible private occupational pensioners affected by losses arising from the 2019 currency reforms. The payments are funded by a USD 1.75 million dividend from Mutapa Gold Resources and represent partial compensation rather than full restoration of lost value. Beneficiaries were selected through a means test that prioritized pensioners who received the lowest benefits during the 2019 currency conversion, starting with the eldest. The current phase follows payments to 4,000 pensioners funded by a USD 400,000 dividend received in 2021. Further payments depend on additional dividends from investments held on pensioners’ behalf, while compensation for pre-2009 currency changes will proceed separately after the relevant regulations are gazetted.
