The National Bank of the Republic of Tajikistan held a scientific-theoretical conference on the somoni and unveiled a new commemorative TJS 100 issue released to mark 25 years since the national currency entered circulation. The conference, titled “Somoni currency as a pillar of national statehood”, was hosted at the National Library of Tajikistan with participation from senior government officials, the National Academy of Sciences, international organisations and financial institutions. Speakers reviewed the early post-independence monetary period and the transition from the Tajik rouble to the somoni, referencing the presidential decree signed on 26 October 2000 providing for the somoni to be introduced from 30 October 2000; presentations also covered design choices, cultural and historical motifs and security features of the national currency. The commemorative TJS 100 issue was presented as the first such jubilee release in the country’s independence period and features cultural, historical and architectural elements. In closing remarks, the banking system indicated it will continue work on improving banknote design and introducing new security elements using modern scientific and technological advances.
