The National Bank of Bulgaria announced that BNB Printing Works AD won first place for “best promotional banknote” at the High Security Printing EMEA forum in Basel, Switzerland. The winning entry, themed “The Butterfly Effect”, was created to mark the printing works’ 30th anniversary. The forum focused on technologies for producing banknotes, electronic passports and identity documents across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The award-winning promotional banknote was produced using a complex mix of dry and wet offset, intaglio and screen printing, and included a diffractive stripe from Demax AD with 3D and bas-relief effects, a positive/negative electronic movement effect, an achromatic micro-engraved portrait, micro- and nano-engineered images and registered demetallisation. At the same event, partner company Oberthur Fiduciaire was recognised for “best new series of banknotes” for “The Art of Butterflies”, a five-banknote set printed on a single sheet with five different designs and security threads including Anima, Pulsar and Relief. As background, the National Bank of Bulgaria noted that its BGN 100 banknote issued on 28 December 2018 was selected as “banknote of the year 2019” at the same conference series held in Malta in March 2019.
