The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) published an alert to the public following a press release by Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens that have been reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS messages or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing recipients to banks’ websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. It advised anyone who may have provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through or in response to the fraudulent websites or login screens to contact the bank using the details in Shanghai Commercial Bank’s press release and report the matter to the Police.
