At the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meetings on 23–24 April, People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng held bilateral meetings with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, Banque de France Governor François Villeroy de Galhau, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, and European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque, focusing on global and China–Europe economic and financial conditions and avenues to deepen practical bilateral financial cooperation. Pan highlighted that China’s economy had a good start in the first quarter and that macroeconomic policy would become more proactive and effective. Against ongoing uncertainty in the global recovery, he called for China and Europe to strengthen policy communication and coordination through channels including the China–EU central bank meeting mechanism, the China–EU Financial Working Group and the China–UK Financial Working Group, alongside expanding mutual opening of the financial sector and supporting multilateralism.
