The Central Bank of Iceland has begun publishing monthly data covering all Icelandic króna spot transactions conducted by the country’s four commercial banks. The dataset provides a broader view of the foreign exchange market than the bank’s existing daily interbank statistics, which capture only a small share of total króna trading. It breaks turnover down by major counterparty group and by transactions involving the euro, US dollar and other currencies, while excluding derivatives such as forwards and currency swaps. Turnover totaled ISK 2,498 billion in the first seven months of 2026, averaging ISK 357 billion a month, equivalent to 7% of 2025 gross domestic product. Euro transactions represented 56% of turnover, the US dollar 31% and other currencies 13%. Because the dataset records both sides of transactions between market makers, interbank turnover must be divided by two for comparison with the bank’s daily interbank figures. The Central Bank will publish the data on the 15th day of each month and will continue its daily publication of interbank foreign exchange turnover.
