The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Russian citizen Dmitry Shushlebin was sentenced to six years in prison and three years of supervised release for organizing an identity theft scheme that used synthetic identities to obtain fraudulent credit cards and loans. He was also ordered to pay USD 458,839.69 in restitution. Shushlebin and his co-conspirators submitted more than 100 fraudulent voter registration applications in Florida to make fake identities appear legitimate. He then targeted financial institutions hundreds of times using hundreds of synthetic identities. Shushlebin pleaded guilty in July 2025 to conspiracy to submit fraudulent voter registrations, wire fraud, making false statements and aggravated identity theft.
