The Central Bank of Chile launched the public information campaign “Conoce tus billetes, cuida la Navidad”, together with Carabineros de Chile, to reinforce checks of banknotes and coins as cash circulation increases during year-end shopping and holiday preparations. The campaign points to the Central Bank’s 2022 survey on cash use and preferences and its July Payments Behaviour Study, which indicate that cash remains widely used in Chile, particularly for low-value payments. It promotes the “Look, Tilt and Touch” method for banknotes and a “Look, Touch and Compare” method for coins, and reiterates that any suspected counterfeit should not be spent and should be voluntarily handed over to a bank, the Central Bank or Carabineros/PDI with a complaint; banks will forward suspected items for verification and reimburse only if found to be genuine, while confirmed counterfeits are not reimbursed and may be marked “Presumed False” as a deterrent.
