The Monetary Authority of Macao convened its 2026 Life Annuities and Pension Funds Conference, bringing together about 340 government, regulatory and industry representatives from Macao and Hong Kong. Discussions focused on expanding Macao’s multilayer retirement protection through life annuities, private pensions and the Central Provident Fund System, while maintaining prudent management and protecting consumers’ long-term interests. Monetary Authority of Macao Chairman Vong Sin Man called on insurers to put consumers’ interests first as they expand their business. Social Security Fund Chair Chan Pou Wan reported that preparations are underway to move from a nonmandatory to a mandatory provident fund system, with public views being collected to inform subsequent steps. Participants also discussed gradually upgrading the system, using annuities to convert accumulated assets into stable retirement income and drawing on Hong Kong’s experience with employee choice, default investment arrangements and digital administration.
