The National Bank of Moldova published monthly statistics on the Republic of Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, covering banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu across interbank and intrabank segments and excluding transactions conducted by the central bank. For spot transactions (USD equivalent), interbank turnover totalled USD 76,936.7k in purchases and USD 32,306.8k in sales, while intrabank turnover totalled USD 505,364.0k in purchases and USD 805,831.6k in sales. Intrabank activity was concentrated in EUR (USD 279,451.0k bought and USD 428,528.8k sold) and USD (USD 211,420.0k bought and USD 291,950.4k sold), with smaller volumes in other currencies. Swap turnover was limited to interbank USD swaps of USD 64.5k on both the buy and sell sides, while forward turnover was reported as zero. The series is compiled from banks’ regulatory reports under the framework for setting the official exchange rate, with transactions recorded on the trade date and converted to USD using monthly average exchange rates. The central bank publishes the data monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting month and calculates swap volumes using a daily weighted-average approach based on swap maturity, for example recording a USD 10m 15-day swap in a 30-day month as USD 5m.
