The National Bank of Moldova published its December 2025 statistics on the banking system’s aggregate foreign exchange position, summarising licensed banks’ foreign currency assets and liabilities, open FX positions by currency, total regulatory capital and the open-position ratio. At end-December, total foreign currency assets stood at MDL 53.279bn and total foreign currency liabilities at MDL 53.092bn, including on-balance sheet items, off-balance sheet conditional positions and leu-denominated positions linked to foreign exchange rates. Balance sheet foreign currency assets totalled MDL 49.575bn, led by foreign currency availabilities of MDL 16.470bn, foreign currency loans of MDL 18.557bn and foreign currency required reserves placed at the National Bank of Moldova of MDL 14.633bn. On the liability side, client foreign currency current accounts were MDL 26.176bn and client foreign currency term deposits MDL 17.663bn, alongside other client foreign currency deposits of MDL 5.144bn and foreign currency loans received of MDL 2.596bn. Aggregate open long positions were MDL 324.820m, mainly in EUR (MDL 237.287m), while open short positions were MDL 137.592m, primarily in EUR (MDL 92.438m) and USD (MDL 33.053m); total regulatory capital was MDL 23.349bn. The release notes the data are compiled from banks’ open FX position reports under the National Bank of Moldova’s regulation on open foreign exchange positions and are published monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting month.
