The Hong Kong Monetary Authority, together with The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited and Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, announced that the public can exchange new notes and good-as-new notes at branches of the three note-issuing banks from 14 January to 28 January for Chinese New Year. Alongside the cash exchange arrangements, the HKMA encouraged the use of electronic channels for giving lai-see, including the Faster Payment System via online or mobile banking and other e-wallet services, with major banks and electronic payment operators expected to run promotional programmes. Operational measures for the exchange period include earlier branch opening at 8:00 a.m. on 14–16 January with the 8:00–9:00 a.m. hour dedicated to note exchange, online booking for new and good-as-new notes from 7 January (with bank-specific details to be announced within the following week), and crowd-management steps such as physical tickets and queue controls where needed.
