The Bank of Papua New Guinea has unveiled the official designs for a commemorative PGK 50 banknote and a 50 toea coin to mark Papua New Guinea’s upcoming 50th anniversary of independence, with both planned for release into circulation in August 2025 ahead of Independence Day. Both items feature the 50th Anniversary Logo. The PGK 50 banknote highlights Papua New Guinea’s flora and fauna, including the Blue Orchid, Queen Alexandra’s butterfly and the Raggiana Bird of Paradise, while the 50 toea coin includes a coloured inlay of the national flag, credited to Susan Karike. Note Printing Australia will manufacture the banknote and the Royal Australian Mint will produce the coin, following a ceremonial handover of the designs at an event attended by Prime Minister James Marape.
