The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has published its 2025 authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs) Points of Presence Statistics, an annual dataset covering physical banking service channels such as branches, ATMs and EFTPOS facilities. The release shows physical points of presence continued to decline over the past year, but at a slower rate than in previous years, and APRA also confirmed it has concluded its review of Points of Presence data for ADIs. Between June 2024 and June 2025, the number of bank branches nationwide fell 4.6%. Regional and remote areas recorded a 1.9% decline, the smallest fall since the series began, which APRA attributes in part to a moratorium on regional branch closures agreed between the Australian Government and major banks in February. APRA noted the statistics do not capture all banking service channels and should be read alongside increased digital banking usage and the role of other service providers, pointing to Australian Payments Network data on ATMs including those operated by third parties and encouraging industry bodies to work together to improve transparency.

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority publishes 2025 ADI points of presence statistics showing a 4.6% fall in bank branches
The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) released its 2025 Points of Presence Statistics, noting a continued decline in physical banking channels, including branches, ATMs, and EFTPOS, though at a slower rate. From June 2024 to June 2025, bank branches decreased by 4.6% nationwide, with regional areas seeing a 1.9% decline, the smallest since the series began, partly due to a moratorium on regional closures. APRA stressed considering these statistics alongside rising digital banking and third-party ATM data, urging industry collaboration for better transparency.
